Recently, Sunset Magazine renovated a home in Denver, called the 2015 Idea House. This brick, ranch, midcentury home has undergone a complete renovation, and even gained a second floor during its incredible transformation. Design Platform designed and constructed the home, and interior design was done by cky design. Environmental Designs were in charge of the landscape, and the Denver Dumb Friends League joined in as the charity partner for this home, which is located in the Hilltop neighborhood here in Denver: 5131 East 1st Ave. Fun Fact: Kentwood Cherry Creek listed this house – Go Kentwood!
Hilltop is a neighborhood between Colorado Blvd, Severn Ave, Alameda Ave, and Monaco Blvd. The neighborhood is a mixture of original and new construction, and happens to be one of the priciest in Denver. The lots are fairly large, so it’s perfect for either add-ons or complete tear-downs. Because of this, Hilltop is quite popular.
The Sunset Idea House has been under renovation for a while, as this is a considerable project. The home was originally 4 beds, 3 baths, and 3,368 sqft, including the basement. Now, it has 5 bedrooms and 6 baths, and much more square footage (roughly about 5,000, including the basement). They did some pretty cool things with this house, and really elevated the value as a result.
Each bedroom has an ensuite bathroom and plenty of closet space. The original home likely had 3 bedrooms on the main floor and 2 baths like most 1950’s homes in Denver do. Now, there’s one bedroom on the main floor that would make an excellent guest bedroom. Additionally, there’s a covered porch and large foyer with a two-story tall adjacent living room.
The stairs are a main focal point in the home, visible as you walk in. Behind the stairs, the kitchen takes up most of the room, as is indicative of a midcentury modern home. The home also features a dining room with a slider door and patio, and a family room with views to the front of the house. Additionally, you’ll find a guest suite, mudroom (a must for any family), an attached two-car garage, and an outdoor kitchen and patio space. Head to the second floor, and you’ll be pleased to see a massive roof deck (quite popular in new Denver construction). The basement features a media/theater room, a laundry/storage room, and another bedroom, another bathroom, and play room.
Tours of the home are available from August 7 through September 14. General Admission tickets to see the home are $20.00, and you can go anytime on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday until September 13. On August 22, Sunset will host a Denver Modern Home & Garden Tour, a self-guided tour that will culminate at the Sunset Idea House with a wine and cheese reception. There, you’ll get to meet the architecture and design firms, for $60/ticket.
The Idea Home will be featured in the November issue of Sunset Magazine. See you there!
